May 17 marked not only the graduation of the 2007 Leadership Sandy Springs class, but also the successful implementation of four community projects.

The class of 27 local men and women, who participated in the nine-month community leadership program, was split into four groups. Each group planned, owned and implemented a project to benefit the Sandy Springs community.

“The Leadership Sandy Springs Class of 2007 is certainly an outstanding group of individuals,” stated Leadership Sandy Springs Executive Director Carolyn Axt.

“They have already made significant contributions to our community through their projects. And, based upon their interest and knowledge, I am confident they will continue to truly have a positive impact on Sandy Springs in the future.”

The first of the projects was “Building Sandy Springs One Brick at a Time”, a partnership with Heritage Sandy Springs.

The group is currently selling bricks to be placed around the new Sandy Springs Society Entertainment Lawn at Sandy Springs Historic Site.

Money raised from the bricks will purchase benches to be used by visitors while attending summer concerts, special events or using the park on a daily basis.

The second project was free AED and CPR training held at all Sandy Springs Fire Stations on April 21.

Working with the City of Sandy Springs Fire Department and American Heart Association, over 250 residents were trained in CPR to learn what to do in the critical first moments before medical assistance arrives.

The third project, a Sandy Springs Youth Day at Hammond Park, will be held May 19 at Hammond Park.

Working with City of Sandy Springs Recreation & Parks Department, a fun family day is planned.

There will be activities for children led by community groups, events showcasing Hammond Park offerings and free inflatables for children to enjoy.

The fourth project will provide teen driving courses and access to driving simulators. This is a cooperative effort with the City of Sandy Springs Police Department and Safe Teen Georgia.

The Leadership Sandy Springs group will work to raise money for partial scholarships designated for?teenaged Sandy Springs residents with financial needs as referred by schools and the Community Action Center.
