“An incredible turnout.”
That’s how Tossed Out Treasures Co-Chair Mary Cox describes the Sandy Springs Society’s upscale garage sale April 3-6.
“We are still counting tickets and money, but without a doubt we had our biggest crowds ever,” Cox said.
Contributing to the record crowd was the half-price sale day on April 6. For the first time, Tossed Out Treasures opened late Sunday afternoon with everything half off. Shoppers started lining up outside the North River Shopping Center at 11:00 a.m. waiting for the doors to open at 1:00 p.m.
The same was true for the preview party Thursday night.
All profits from the sale are donated to Sandy Springs non-profits through a grant application process overseen by the society’s Philanthropic Committee. Since its beginning 20 years ago, the group has donated nearly $2 million to local non-profits in the areas of arts, education, environment, heritage preservation and social services.
“Tossed Out Treasures not only raises funds for these groups but we also provide in-kind help by letting them ‘shop’ what’s left at the end of our sale,” said Carolyn Axt, of the Tossed Out Treasures charity committee.
Axt had a list of 25 charities that she invited to come shop for any items that would help provide services to their communities. The groups included the Community Action Center, Atlanta Women and Children’s Shelter, the Mary Hall Freedom House, Home Stretch and Drake House.
“Keep North Fulton Beautiful came this year and they were thrilled with the computers they got for their center which rehabs old computers,” Axt said.
“A big part of what makes this sale successful is our donated space,” Cox said. “Mimms Enterprises donated what was once a flea market in the North River Shopping Center. It was the perfect place for us.”
