A section of Peachtree Road in south Buckhead closed from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. April 8 as the Atlanta police SWAT team sought to arrest a suspect in a rape/kidnap case. Police said the armed standoff ended when the suspect killed himself.

The man tentatively was identified as 42-year-old James Scott Carringer, who was accused of kidnapping and raping a 19-year-old relative, Atlanta Police Zone 2 Commander Major R. L. Browning said.

Browning said police received a 911 call at 5:30 a.m. about a suspicious vehicle parked behind the Mellow Mushroom restaurant at 1170 Peachtree Road. During the standoff, Peachtree Road was closed between Deering Road and 26th Street.

When officers approached, Browning said the occupant told them he was suicidal and had a gun and explosives.

A SWAT team was called in and police said a gunshot was heard. Browning said a robot was used to detonate an explosive to knock out a window of the car.

He said the man was found dead in the vehicle of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said they didn’t find any explosives in the vehicle.
