Alicia Schaefer protests at a Fulton County school board meeting May 20.

Alicia Schaefer, mother of a seventh-grade violinist, held a sign May 20 to protest cutting music programs from elementary schools.

But it didn’t change anything.

That night the Fulton County school board tentatively passed its $1.17 billion budget for next year at a meeting at Dunwoody Springs Charter Elementary School in Sandy Springs. To close a more than $100 million budget gap, the board eliminated money for band and orchestra instruction in elementary schools and cut almost 1,000 positions. The board also is considering raising property taxes and will hold a public hearing on June 8.

The school board will take a final vote on the budget June 15.

“We’ll just keep fighting,” Schaefer said.
