Dunwoody moms and dads did their bits for the city’s second annual Chili Cook-Off. At top right, Mayor Ken Wright and his daughter Cassidy, 10, were among the judges charged with picking the best pepper-based concoctions cooked up for the Oct. 23 competition.
Fred Steck, at center right, serves up a taste of his Slap Your Poppa team’s savory stew, which took second place in the “backyard” category. Teammate Marc Lalley said Slap Your Poppa’s prize-winning chili took three days to make. During the last Super Bowl, Lalley said, he and Steck each made a pot of chili and let their wives and children pick the best one. Lalley’s won, so his recipe provided the base of the team’s entry.
Dave Lupoli, in the blond wig in the photo at bottom, and Rich Dolder said pulled pork was the secret ingredient in their Dunwoody Chili Brigade creation. Their entry, Dolder said, started as 32 pounds of pork shoulders smoked in a Big Green Egg. Did the crowd go for a barbecue-based chili? “It’s flying off the table,” Dolder said.
