A former forensic firearm examiner for the U.S. Army has been hired as the new director of the Atlanta Police Department’s crime lab.

Don Mikko, a forensic firearm and tool mark examiner for the army for 22 years and chief of the firearms branch at the Army Crime Lab at Fort Gillem, Ga., for a dozen years, began work at the APD lab in May.

“These services are hugely important to supporting our investigative work, solving crimes and achieving justice for victims affected by crime,” Atlanta Police Chief George N. Turner said in a press release. “Don’s experience, wealth of knowledge and leadership in the Crime Lab will be a tremendous asset to both the department and to the citizens of Atlanta.”
