Hundreds of schoolchildren and their parents walked the halls of Jackson Elementary and other Atlanta schools on Aug. 3 as they prepared to return for a new year of classes starting Monday, Aug. 6.
“It’s our big day,” Jackson Principal Lorraine Reich said. “Everybody comes today. It’s like an open house.”
On Monday, about 960 students are expected to start classes on Jackson’s two campuses. Kindergarten and first grade are taught at the school’s primary campus at 4191 Northside Drive and second through fifth grades at the main campus, located at 1325 Mount Paran Road.
The “celebration of learning” held Aug. 3 at Jackon and other schools allowed students and their parents to meet their new teachers, check out classrooms and otherwise get ready to start back to school.
With first-day, get-used-to-school activities out of the way, “Monday’s a school day,” Reich said.
Most Atlanta Public Schools students will start a new school year on Monday, Aug. 6. Students attending year-round schools started July 10, the district said in a press release.
APS said changes in attendance districts and transportation schedules the district is implementing this school year are detailed on the district Web site (www.atlantapublicschools.us) under the scrolling banner at to the top of the home page “New at APS for the 2012-13 School Year.”
