The Governor’s Commission on Brookhaven will hold its first meeting at 8 p.m. Sept. 13 at St. Martin’s Episcopal School, 3110 Ashford Dunwoody Road.
The five-member commission was appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal Aug. 31 and tasked with helping set up the new city of Brookhaven.
The commission plans to meet each week until the mayor and city council are elected. Election Day is Nov. 6. If necessary, a runoff election will be held Dec. 4. The city is scheduled to officially begin operations on Dec. 17.
To set up Brookhaven’s municipal structure, the commission’s major tasks will be to vet candidates for major city positions such as city manager, city attorney and city clerk; plan for city services; issue requests for proposals for contractors; negotiate with DeKalb County; identify space for city offices; and hold a training seminar for city council candidates.
