BR-brookhaven park - 0304

Thousands of soccer fans crowded Brookhaven Park on Sunday, June 22, to watch the United States team tie Portugal in the World Cup.

Brookhaven police estimated on Monday, June 23, that “well over” 10,000 fans took part in the Atlanta Soccerfest event, but no more than 7,000 to 8,000 were in the park at any one time, said department spokesman Maj. Brandon Gurley.

Police considered closing the park at one point because of the size of the crowd, Gurley said, but did not.

No one was arrested during the event, he said.

“We were very pleased with the end result,” he said.
