On July 31, 2012 voters in a 10-county region of metro Atlanta are to decide whether to impose a 1-cent sales tax to pay for transportation projects in the region. The tax usually is called the “T-SPLOST,” for Transportation Special Local Option Sales Tax. It is expected to raise more than $7.2 billion, in 2011 dollars, for the projects. Of that amount, about $6.1 billion, or 85 percent of the total, is directed to regional projects. Another $1.1 billion will be divided among the cities and counties in the region to pay for local transportation projects in their communities.
