To the editor:

The city of Brookhaven has passed a critical junction in its formation effort. Although not yet a legal city charter, citizens should now begin the important work of developing a vision for the community.

If voters approve the referendum on July 31, we will have three months to vet and elect new city officials. Let’s give these new officials a head start by creating a prioritized list of projects for our new municipality.

We need citizen input to create a vision for the roads and drainage and parks and recreation budgets, as well as for public safety and code enforcement.

The Brookhaven parks and recreation budget is envisioned to be nearly three times as large as that proposed by DeKalb County. How do we want to spend that money? Is it for new playground equipment at Blackburn Park, a new fence at Brookhaven Park, or tennis court upgrades at Briarwood Park, and what should be done at Skyland Park?

Is improvement at the intersection of Johnson Ferry and Ashford Dunwoody roads the number one priority? Or is the priority at the intersection of Dresden Drive and Peachtree Road?

We need to develop the vision, publish the findings and offer the newly elected City Council the benefit of our collective wisdom.

What’s your priority for our new city?
