The 2010 Playhouse BuildIf you are interested in supporting the mission of Habitat for Humanity DeKalb, but don’t have the resources or time to commit to a full house build, the Playhouse Build offers an opportunity to get involved on, literally, a smaller scale. Participants in the Playhouse Build will construct a 4’ x 6’ outdoor playhouse for children. The Playhouses will then be donated to an auction held by Habitat for Humanity DeKalb as a fundraising event. The proceeds from the auction will be used to continue the work of Habitat for Humanity in DeKalb County.

Habitat for Humanity DeKalb will kick off the event with a Framing Frenzy Day on Saturday, Feb. 12,  similar to a regular Habitat House Build, with each group framing their own Playhouse.  When framing is complete, each group will take their Playhouse to their own staging area where they will complete the Playhouse with their own creative ideas and energy.

“The Playhouse Build concept was launched this year to expand the options available for families, businesses and community groups to get involved in the work of our local affiliate. For example, we have several schools interested in getting their students active in this smaller scale building project,” says John Shaffer, the new Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity DeKalb. “Folks may not know that Habitat for Humanity has High School and College Chapters that are a great training ground for leadership and character building We are actively working with community leaders and educators to expand Habitat for Humanity Chapters in DeKalb County. The Playhouse build is a perfect entrée into the experience of a Habitat for Humanity Student Chapter.”

Upon completion, Perimeter Mall will feature a display of a select number of playhouses. Habitat for Humanity DeKalb will announce prizes in various categories for the best playhouses. Finally, playhouses will be made available for auction as a source of support for our DeKalb County affiliate.
