The Rotary Club of Sandy Springs will welcome Canadian Consul General Stephen Brereton on Monday, March 19. He was appointed Consul General of the Consulate General of Canada in Atlanta in 2009.
Brereton will speak about trade between Canada and the United States, the Rotary Club’s press release says. The meeting will be held at Hammond Glen Senior Community in Sandy Springs and starts at 12:15 p.m.
According to the Counsul General’s webstie, “Mr. Brereton is a career diplomat with a distinguished background in international trade policy. He joined the Canadian Foreign Service in 1979 following graduation from Queen’s University with an Honors BA in Economics.
“His foreign service career has included assignments as the Trade Policy Counselor at the Canadian Mission to the European Union based in Brussels (1992-96) and diplomatic responsibilities at the Canadian Embassies in Tokyo, Japan (1984-87) and Havana, Cuba(1980-82). Most recently he served as Consul General at the Canadian Consulate General in Buffalo, New York (2005-2009).
“Mr. Brereton’s appointment as Consul General in Atlanta also follows extensive periods of service at the departmental headquarters in Ottawa where he served as Director of the Investment Trade Policy Division from 1999-2005 and as Director of the Trade Controls Policy Division at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in the late 1990’s. In earlier positions at headquarters, he served as Departmental Assistant to the Minister of Industry and International Trade, Deputy Director of the U.S. Tariffs and Market Access Division, and Trade Policy Officer in the GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) Division.
“A native of Toronto, Mr. Brereton and his wife Carolyn have two sons, James and William.
“The Consulate General of Canada in Atlanta administers trade, investment, consular and public affairs programs throughout a six-state territory in the southeastern United States—Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.”
