Sandy Springs just released the agenda for its upcoming Tuesday meeting, and it includes an overhaul of the city’s sign ordinances and a proposal to move 244 structures out of a flood plain.

Under the new sign rules, all monument style signs will be required to have a base made of either brick or stone. The base of the signs will also be required to be equal to or greater than the top of the sign.

The new regulations would require businesses to display their addresses at the top of monument signs, like this:

The ordinance would also prohibit any sign using “LED technology and/or components, except those where the LED technology is the internal light source as defined by this ordinance for an opaque faced area of the sign.”

Read all the details of the ordinance here.

The flood plain issue is one that has frustrated the City Council and residents for months. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is updating its flood maps and the changes could hurt property values of homes found to be in a flood plain. The city has the option to remove 244 structures from the Zone A high flood risk area by designating them Zone X. Zone X properties are scattered throughout each of the city’s six council districts. Property owners have asked the city to consider removing their homes so they won’t be required to carry flood insurance.

The city will consider a resolution moving these properties to Zone X. See the proposed resolution here.

There is also an item on the work session agenda titled, “Updated city fee schedule.” City spokeswoman Sharon Kraun said it is a “housekeeping item,” to update the city’s revenue fee schedule so it will correctly line up with changes to city ordinances.

The City Council will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, at 7840 Roswell Road.
