If you’re a movie lover, then grab some popcorn – and maybe some sunscreen – as a bevy of summer film festivals flicker to life across Intown.
From timeless classics to recent blockbusters, these festivals are being held indoors and out and will appeal to a variety of ages – young kids to adults.
High Museum of Art
The Big Apple takes the big screen as the High presents Archival Gotham: NYC on Film on Saturdays during June and August. Film enthusiasts will enjoy popular favorites and historic films featuring the capital of the world. Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd and Harvey Keitel appear in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (Aug. 11) and Marlon Brando commands the screen in On The Waterfront (Aug. 18), winner of eight Academy Awards. The series also includes Rodney Dangerfield in The Projectionist and a collection of six “Gotham Shorts,” which open the festival on June 9, featuring Orson Welles directing and starring in The Hearts of Age. Flicks on 5th
The 7th annual Flicks on 5th Summer Film Series kicks off June 6 for four weeks of free movie on the 5th Street Bridge in the heart of Georgia Tech’s Technology Square. This year’s line up includes Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (June 6), The Vow (June 13), Footloose (June 20) and Happy Feet 2 (June 27). The pre?movie entertainment starts at 7 p.m. and free popcorn is available while supplies last. Enjoy great eats and movie specials from Tech Square’s local restaurants, which include Tin Drum Asia Cafe, 5th Street Ribs N Blues, Waffle House, Barrelhouse Tavern, and Ray’s ? Cedars Mediterranean and more. All movies are rain or shine and movie line?up is subject to change. Patrons are welcome to bring blankets and folding chairs. Movies In Central Park
Atlantic Station is hosting an outdoor movie festival all summer long in Central Park. Movies are screened every Thursday on a huge screen now through Aug. 23. Admission is free and movies begin at dusk. The line-up includes: The Muppets (June 7), The Help (June 14), The Lincoln Lawyer (June 21), Spiderman (June 28), Captain America (July 5), Grease (July 12), Forest Gump (July 19), Clueless (July 26), The Notebook (Aug. 2), Ferris Buller’s Day Off (Aug. 9), The Blind Side (Aug. 16) and Hugo (Aug. 23). Bring a lawn chair or blanket, pack a picnic or grab food from one of the many restaurants in Atlantic Station for the full movie under the stars experience. 2012 Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival
Seeing a movie at the elegant Fox Theatre is a completely different experience than going to today’s multiplex cinemas. The Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival will celebrate films of the past and present all season long beginning this month with three blockbusters: a 70th anniversary screening of Casablanca (June 14), the 40th anniversary of The Godfather (June 15) and a very special event, Sing-a-Long Sound of Music (June 24). Other movies coming up this summer include a 25th anniversary screening of The Princess Bride (July 15) and a 40th anniversary screening of Deliverance (July 20). These classics will be interspersed with current films that will be announced soon and special Saturday morning cartoon screenings for kids. Of course, before each movie there will be a sing-a-long lead by Larry Douglas Embury on the Mighty Mo organ and classic cartoons. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and under and seniors 65 and up. Saturday morning cartoon tickets are $5 for all ages. Chastain Park Summer Movie Series
The Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces (which puts on the Chastain Park Arts Festival and Festival on Ponce, among others) will host this new series every Thursday night in July. The series will include The Artist (July 5), Mirror Mirror (July 12), Letters from Juliet (July 19) and Breakfast at Tiffany’s (July 26). Local food trucks will be on hand and there will also be beer and wine available. Blankets are welcome, but no lawn chairs will be allowed. For more, visit the Facebook page.
