While neighbors and news reporters watched, a frustrated Brookhaven man unloaded a bag of road-patching material he’d bought and filled a pothole on his street.
Pete Cabrelli, who supports creation of a city of Brookhaven when the issue goes to a public vote July 31, said he decided to patch the hole on July 13 because it had been at the end Stratfield Drive for more than a year and he was sick of it.
“I’ve finally reached the end of my rope…,” he said. “I’m tired. I’m fed up.”
Had he ever patched a pothole before? “Not in a public road,” he said.
Someone asked if he had asked DeKalb County for a permit to do the work. “No,” he said. “I figure it’s a lot easier to ask for absolution than approval.”
A group of his neighbors gathered on the sidewalk to watch as he worked.
“We think it’s wonderful that Pete’s willing to do this,” neighbor Cathy Furbish said. Cars had been bouncing through the pair of potholes for a year or more, she said. “We’re just glad to have them fixed.”
AJC.com reported that after Cabrelli finished, a county work crew showed up. County officials said they had no record of a complaint about the potholes, the website said. The county crew refilled the potholes, ajc.com reported.
