Fulton County’s Board of Education is considering dividing its regular meetings between the northern and southern parts of the county.
The BOE voted 5-2 on Nov. 21 to put the question on its Dec. 3 agenda. If approved, the changes would take effect in the 2014 and 2015 school year. School officials plan to move their central office from south Fulton to Sandy Springs in September 2014, and that’s caused some controversy among south Fulton residents.
The two “no” votes came from board members representing districts in north Fulton. District 3 BOE member Gail Dean, who represents Sandy Springs, voted “no” along with District 2 BOE member Katie Reeves, who represents Alpharetta and Milton.
Dean said on Friday that she had proposed holding 1/3 of the meetings in south Fulton and 2/3 in north Fulton, which reflects how the school system’s population is divided.
“My idea didn’t fly and that’s why I voted against the proposal, because I felt it would be fair to hold the meetings where the people and students are,” Dean said.
