With the Atlanta Braves formally announcing they will depart Turner Field on Dec. 31, 2016 for its new home in Cobb County, residents around The Ted said they would be attending the Atlanta City Council meeting on Monday, Aug. 17, and the Fulton County Commission on Aug. 19 to be sure that redevelopment is guided by “community vision.”

Kimberly Jones from the Turner Field Community Benefits Coalition said dozens of residents plan to attend the meeting. The city council meeting is at 1 p.m. at City Hall and the commission meeting is at 10 a.m. at the Fulton County Government Center.

In July, a letter from the Turner Field Community Benefits Coalition was hand-delivered by a delegation of over 50 neighborhood residents to Mayor Kasim Reed and city and county leaders.

The letter asked the mayor to make a public commitment to completing the Turner Field Livable Centers Initiative Planning Study (LCI) process before negotiating any development deal. The LCI Planning Study grant was awarded to the City of Atlanta in February 2015 and represents the largest LCI grant ever-awarded by the Atlanta Regional Commission. The study is due to be completed by July 31, 2016.

The Turner Field Community Benefits Coalition is a coalition of 42 neighborhood associations and advocacy groups representing thousands of residents in the communities surrounding Turner Field. For more information about the coalition, including a list of members, can be found at www.turnerfieldcoalition.org.
