The Buckhead Community District met Dec. 7 and were updated on Bigbelly trash cans as well as the likely $705,000 purchase of more police surveillance cameras and license plate readers

— In January, the BCID board will consider spending $705,000 to purchase and install 20 surveillance cameras that pan, zoom and tilt and also to buy 30 license plate readers as part of the Atlanta Police Department’s Operation Shield program, according to Executive Director Jim Durrett.

The city of Atlanta recently announced it invested $350,000 in technological enhancements to the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) program at the Operation Shield Video Integration Center (VIC), funded by the Renew Atlanta infrastructure bond program.

The VIC integrates approximately 7,500 publicly and privately owned cameras which increases the Atlanta Police Department’s coverage of the city streets, using state-of-the-art analytical software.

— Atlanta City Councilmember Howard Shook told the BCID board that Dec. 5 the council authorized Mayor Kasim Reed to enter into a contract with Bigbelly, a Massachusetts-based company that creates solar-powered compacting trash cans that squeeze garbage and use a wireless signal to alert sanitation crews when they’re full.

The Bigbelly business model includes placing advertising on the trash cans, which BCID members do not want. After a contract is finalized with the city, then the city will work with the BCID for its own separate Bigbelly contract, said Durrett.
