After Deputy Chief Mike Carlson became Dunwoody’s top officer succeeding Billy Grogan, a series of internal promotions have filled his position and elevated several other officers in the department’s ranks.

Carlson was one of the founding members of the Dunwoody Police Department, joining as a sergeant in 2009. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2015, major in 2019, and deputy chief in 2021, overseeing the department’s day-to-day operations.

Taking the deputy chief slot is former Maj. Oliver Fladrich. Patrick Krieg was promoted to major overseeing the administrative services/criminal investigation division.

According to public information officer Sgt. Michael Cheek, pending moves include elevating former Sgt. Tim Fecht to lieutenant in the patrol division and night division patrol officer Matthew Carley, who will be given the title of sergeant and stay in the night division.

The internal moves, according to Cheek, reflected a natural progression of elevating talent within the department.

“There is benefits to promoting from within,” he said. “These are qualified people we have trained and developed, and there’s no reason to go outside the department to fill these positions.”

The shifting of responsibilities opens up a vacant position in the officer ranks, which the department is trying to fill, he said.
