Oglethorpe University is preparing for a busy spring of arts, speakers, and a collaborative event with the city of Brookhaven.
First up is the annual poetry event, Oglethorpe Out Loud on Thursday, March 20. This year features the work of author, educator and Oglethorpe alumna Aline Mello. Her selections will include pieces from her first published poetry collection, “More Salt than Diamond,” a powerful expression of the struggles she experienced as a young immigrant in the American South. Her work explores themes of culture and identity, and a desire to belong.
“Exposure to poetry and creative writing is not going to save the world,” Mello said. “But, creating and sharing art can help people feel less alone. Many people can see themselves in art and connect with one another; it can help us understand that our points of view are not as different as we think.”
Held March 28 during alumni weekend, the university will induct into the OU Athletics Hall of Fame baseball player and 2015 alum Patrick Kulick, golfer and 2015 alum Anthony Maccaglia, tennis player and 2010 alum Felix Mann, and soccer player and 2015 alum Nikos Papanikolopoulus. A 1994 grad, Cameron Bready, CEO of Atlanta-based Global Payments, is receiving the top alumni award.
Next month, “Xanadu” is being put on by the Oglethorpe Theater from April 4-6. The journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mount Olympus to Venice Beach, Calif. in 1980 is a student production.
Finally, Sip Brookhaven is scheduled for Saturday, April 12. A collaboration with Explore Brookhaven and Oglethorpe, the event will feature an afternoon of music, wine, beer, and curated pairings. Tickets are available here.
