Everybody’s going to cut “Footloose” as the musical dances onto the Byers Theatre stage at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center for a three-day run starting on Friday, June 27.
“Footloose the Musical,” with its songbook of chart-topping hits and non-stop dance numbers, will be presented by City Springs Theatre Conservatory, the education arm of the City Springs Theatre Company, according to a news release. The conservatory’s annual high school summer musical is based on the 1984 film of the same name.
Broadway veterans Kristine Reese (“Les Misérables”) and Billy Tighe (Pippin, “The Heart of Rock and Roll”) will direct the musical.
“The summer musical is one of our favorite shows of the year, showcasing some of metro Atlanta’s top youth talent both on stage and behind the scenes,” said Natalie DeLancey, executive director of City Springs Theatre Company. “Audiences who remember the film and its iconic soundtrack will be thrilled and delighted by what our aspiring Broadway-bound talent brings to this exciting story.”
The plot follows a rebellious teenager who moves from Chicago to a small Texas town where he discovers that dancing has been outlawed, thanks to a local preacher exercising control over the town’s youth. The musical celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people while guiding them with a warm heart and open mind, according to the release.
The musical’s songbook features the film’s two Oscar-nominated songs, “Footloose,” and “Let’s Hear It For The Boy,” as well as the Top 40 soundtrack hits “Almost Paradise,” “Holding Out For A Hero,” and “I’m Free (Heaven Helps The Man).”.New songs have been added for the musical, written by Tom Snow and Dean Pitchford, who together wrote the aforementioned hit “Let’s Hear It For The Boy.”

Choreography for the City Springs Theatre Conservatory production of “Footloose the Musical” will be by Michael Persson and Colleen Roberts, with music direction by Holt McCarley. The musical’s lyrics are by Pitchford, with music by Snow, and the book is by Pitchford and Walter Bobbie. Additional music is by Eric Carmen, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins, and Jim Steinman. The production is made possible by a special arrangement with Concord Theatricals.
