Scraplanta, Tucker’s creative reuse store, is raising money after being forced to temporarily close due to a leak that caused the ceiling to collapse.

Jonelle Dawkins, the Executive Director of Scraplanta, told Rough Draft that a recurring summer leak worsened on May 22, leading to a ceiling tile collapse on May 24. No one was injured.

“This is a stressful end to our two slowest months of the year,” she said.

Dawkins said the leak was due to issues with the AC, which the staff struggled to get repaired.

“On Wednesday evening, we called several repair places to get an appointment for Thursday,” Dawkins said. “Our appointments kept getting pushed back, and we [had] to keep the store closed until we can get the ceiling tile repaired.”

The store reopened on May 29 after being closed for four business days

Scraplanta is hosting a fundraiser to raise money for both the HVAC repair costs, which will be the store’s responsibility, and income for staff who were unable to work during the closure. The store has raised $1,100 of its $5,000 goal.

Scraplanta is a non-profit promoting environmental awareness, education, and creative expression through the collection and reuse of arts and crafts materials.
