Synchronicity Theatre will close its final season in its longtime Atlanta home with the world premiere of “In Spite of My Ambivalence,” a new play that runs June 5-28.
Directed by Lauren Morris, the play marks the final full production in the theater company’s current space at Peachtree Pointe, after spending more than a decade in the Midtown venue.
The show from playwright Catherine Yu follows five characters as they explore questions of intimacy, trauma, loneliness, identity and healing, “all while navigating the awkward humor and sharp edges of everyday life,” said a release.
According to Synchronicity, the story delves into several themes (such as grief, desire, friendship and the challenges of moving forward) through intersecting experiences set across environments like war zones, bedrooms and therapy sessions.
Synchronicity says that it selected the play for its “beautiful writing and emotional sophistication,” and continues the company’s long-running emphasis on women-led storytelling, new work development and community-centered programming.
“This production feels like the right final note for this space,” said Rachel May, Synchronicity Theatre’s producing artistic director. “It’s intelligent, emotionally textured, unexpectedly funny and deeply alive. In true Synchronicity fashion, it is also deeply theatrical, with gorgeous projection and scenic design, and original music. As we prepare to leave the building we’ve called home for over a decade, we wanted to end this chapter with work that reflects who we are — ambitious, evolving and always deeply committed to bold storytelling.”
Performances are scheduled Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m.
General admission tickets start at $35, with other options available (including “swanky” reserved seating, $10 Adventurer Tickets and more).
