Atlanta Police said four people, including the suspect, were shot Tuesday at the Peachtree Center food court in Downtown.

During a press conference, Chief Darin Schierbaum said an off-duty Atlanta Police officer working security at Peachtree Center shot the suspect, argued with one of the victims before opening fire. He said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) would be investigating the officer-involved shooting.

WSB-TV is also reporting that the suspect in custody who allegedly hijacked a Gwinnett County bus and murdered one of the passengers was spotted outside Peachtree Center arguing with someone following the shooting. Law enforcement has not tied the two incidents together.

Mayor Andre Dickens said two of the victims were at Grady Hospital and two were at Emory Midtown Hospital, but all were expected to survive their injuries.

“This was a critical incident that started as a fight and turned into a gun being pulled out and three people being shot,” Dickens said. “This is a busy area where people work and dine.”

The suspect – identified as Jeremy Malone, 34, of Morrow – is a convicted felon who was prohibited from owning a gun. Schierbaum said the suspect had 11 previous arrests, including one for armed robbery, and “should have never been in possession of a gun.”

Police were called to the 235 Peachtree St. building of Peachtree Center at about 2:30 p.m. to investigate the shooting of multiple people.

The four people shot were all alert, conscious and breathing, according to law enforcement. One of the people shot is also the suspected gunman, police said.

Mayor Andre Dickens said in a separate post on X that four people had been shot at the food court and the building was on lockdown. He followed up with another post also saying one of the four victims is the alleged shooter.

Members of Atlanta Tech Village in Downtown, located at 170 Mitchell St. SW, received an email about 3 p.m. advising they shelter in place.

“We have been notified of a possible assailant and several injured on Peachtree Street. Please remain in place and remain calm,” the email said. “We will send updates as soon as possible but for your safety and the safety of others we are asking that you stay where you are. Police have not said whether the suspect is in custody but it is believed that the suspect may be one of the injured parties.”
