Advocacy and art

Mar. 11 — In case you missed it, the March issue of Georgia Voice is out now, and you can read the entire issue online or pick up a print copy in Atlanta. The issue features our cover story on Cattle Shed Wine & Steak Bar’s Executive Chef Liv Hurst, along with stories on LGBTQ+ political candidates, a roundup of state and local news, and dining features.

And now a few news headlines:

🗳️ Trump said he won’t sign any bills unless Congress passes the Save Act, a bill that would require in-person proof of citizenship to vote and includes bans on transgender healthcare. However, the Save Act, which Sen. Chuck Schumer dubbed “Jim Crow 2.0,” is unlikely to advance in the Senate.

🏕️  Scouting America pushed back on claims by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that transgender youth would no longer be welcome in its programs.

🚽 The Republican-controlled New Hampshire House passed an anti-trans bathroom bill for schools, government buildings, and some businesses.

🪩 Savannah’s iconic Club One, the home stage of late drag legend Lady Chablis, is moving from Jefferson Street to a new venue on Williamson Street this spring.

🏳️‍🌈 The Georgia LGBTQ History Project has a new name: Out History Georgia. The organization’s mission remains to share collections, stories, and resources that illuminate the state’s LGBTQ past.

📍 Rome Pride, the largest LGBTQ+ Pride organization in northwest Georgia, is looking for vendors for its fifth annual festival on June 27.

Pride to the Capitol promotes a day of LGBTQ+ advocacy

🪧 On March 10, LGBTQ+ Georgians and their allies came together for Pride to the Capitol, a day of advocacy organized by the Human Rights Campaign, Atlanta Pride, Georgia Equality, and more than 30 advocacy groups.

Along with advocacy training and opportunities for contacting lawmakers, the event included a rally at Liberty Plaza outside the State Capitol in Downtown Atlanta. Speakers and performers celebrated the LGBTQ+ community and advocated for freedom for all Georgians.

Officials spoke out against harmful legislation that lawmakers are considering, including a bill that would criminalize librarians for sharing diverse information and another that would put restrictions on gender-affirming care.
