Helen Knight, a senior at Atlanta Girls’ School, was recently named a 2007 PAGE STAR Student by Sophie Mason of Midtown Atlanta Rotary Club, local sponsor of the STAR program. Knight, the daughter of Christine Sloan and Bernard Knight of Decatur, selected Peggy Hasty, senior AP English teacher at the Atlanta Girls’ School as her STAR teacher.

The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, in its 48th year, is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education. Since its inception, the program has honored more than 20,000 students and the teachers they have selected as having has the most influence on their academic achievement. Students are selected on the basis of their SAT scores and class standing/scholastic averages.

The STAR students and their teachers are honored by their schools and receive special recognition in their communities from more than 200 statewide civic organizations and businesses that sponsor local programs. Students then compete for school system titles, and those winners compete for region honors. Knight and Hasty will be honored at the statewide PAGE STAR Student banquet at the end of April.

The Atlanta Girls’ School is the city’s only single-gender college preparatory school for girls grades 6–12. Opened in August 2000, the school serves approximately 190 girls. The school is located at 3254 Northside Parkway. For more information, call 404.845.0900 or visit www.atlantagirlsschool.org.
