Weak housing market places CityPlace project on hold
After more than a year of meetings with neighborhood representatives and obtaining city permits, Miami-based Related Cos. and Atlanta-based Cousins Properties have put on hold CityPlace at Buckhead condominium project until the housing market recovers. The project is planned for Roxboro road near the MARTA station and Lenox Square mall.
“Right now the market is telling us its not time to start construction,” said Lee Hodges, vice president and director of operations for Related’s Atlanta division.
He predicted there is enough condo supply for the next two years.
The project’s information center, however, will remain open.
Hodges saidCityPlace will regain momentum when the market recovers. The building permit is good, and the first of nine planned buildings is designed.
First announced in March 2006, CityPlace is planned for an 18-acre site; it is bordered on the east by Roxboro Road and on the south by East Paces Ferry Road. This represents the first project Related planned for Atlanta. Cousins, which recently partnered with Related, became a partner in the CityPlace development last year. The two companies also plan to join forces on two condo towers in the Terminus project at Peachtree and Piedmont Roads.
