It is often said that the best things come in small packages. That certainly might be true when the small package gets at least 40 miles per gallon and produces few smog-forming emissions.

That’s why the Buckhead Area Transportation Management Association (BATMA) is celebrating Earth Day, April 22, by giving away the chance to get behind the wheel of a Smart Fortwo car at its Go Green & Commute Clean event at Lenox Square Mall.

The event will focus on services and products that help commuters get around Buckhead in a smart and eco-friendly way. Some environmentally conscious organizations will be on hand at Lenox Square Mall from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day to show commuters what they can do to go green and commute clean.

“I think people will be surprised to see how many options are available to keep pollution out of our air,” said Denise Starling, executive director of BATMA. “They’ll even be taking home some party favors of their own—from gifts and prizes to the chance to drive a car that boasts some of the lowest emissions of any vehicle on the market today.”

The first 288 attendees will receive a gift bag filled with various goodies including a compact fluorescent light bulb, which uses 75 percent less energy than the conventional light bulb. They will also be able to explore an array of Energy Star products and sign up for Commuter Rewards, the regional program that rewards clean commuters with cash and prizes. Kids can even meet The Clean Air Campaign mascot, BAIR, the Better Air Bear.

Other organizations on hand include the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign, Pedestrians Educating Drivers on Safety (PEDS), MARTA, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Whole Foods Market Buckhead and Zipcar, Atlanta’s car sharing service. The local free shuttle “the buc” provides easy access to Go Green & Commute Clean with regular pick-ups at Buckhead office buildings and Lenox Square during the event.
