Off-duty police officers working traffic control on Piedmont and Roswell/Habersham roads in the evenings are being pulled away from their jobs to work 12 hour shifts as the Occupy Atlanta protests continue.

Because there is no set date for the protests to end, the traffic program is suspended until further notice, the Buckhead Community Improvement District announced on Oct. 25.

Buckhead CID Executive Director Jim Durrett said commuters will feel the impact. He said because the officers are working longer shifts they are not allowed to hold a part time job.

“It’s going to likely lead to an increased commute,” Durrett said. “It’s a very important program we are unable to use. We hope people understand. This should be a temporary thing.”

The Occupy Atlanta protests are part of the larger Occupy Wall Street movement.
