It began when Lindsey Marcus uploaded a video singing “Somewhere That’s Green” from the musical “Little Shop of Horrors” to YouTube.

Lindsey had heard about the Variety Stars of Tomorrow Competition from her voice teacher and immediately decided to enter. About a month after, Lindsey received an email informing her that she had qualified for the Top 20.

Lindsey, along with the 19 other finalists, then performed a song at the Buckhead Theatre. Lindsey sang “Journey to the Past,” from the movie “Anastasia.” The contestants sang in front of an audience of about 500 and were critiqued by a panel of judges. Afterwards, the contestants lined up and the judges announced the Top 10.

Lindsey was the third person to be called.

“It was a sigh of relief. I had no idea whether I would get in the Top 10 or not because everyone was so talented,” the Dunwoody teenager said. “Even if I didn’t get in, it was such an incredible honor to get into the top 20 in the first place.”

Sandy Springs’ 13-year-old Marguerite Yearns also is among the Top 10 competitors, a spokeswoman for the Stars of Tomorrow contest said in an email. Marguerite attends Mount Vernon Presbyterian School, the spokeswoman said.

Other contestants live in communities scattered from Peachtree City to Lilburn, according to the contest.

The Variety Stars of Tomorrow is Lindsey’s first competition. She has been performing since she was young, and loves the combination of acting, singing, and dancing that goes into musical theatre.

Her voice coach, Bill Newberry, calls her “one of the most gifted young ladies I have ever taught.

“She possesses not only a beautiful voice, but is also a very talented actress who has a great work ethic to be the best performer she can possibly be,” he said. “She is passionate about everything she does, and it shows!”

The next part of the competition will take place March 11 at the Fox Theatre. The judges will narrow the 10 contestants to three. They will receive a variety of prizes including a photo shoot, a custom-made CD demo and tickets to an upcoming show at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. The singer who comes in first also will win a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood.

This is Lindsey’s first competition, and she has enjoyed this new experience.

“When you’re a singer and you don’t do anything for a while, it makes your heart hurt,” Lindsey said. “When I’m singing, it just feels safe and feels like what I’m supposed to be doing.”

Lindsey also loves photography and creative writing. Her favorite subject in school is Language Arts.

What’s Next:

Lindsey will be auditioning for her upcoming school musical and will also be in the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization talent show. Lindsey hopes to attend a college in the north, preferably New York.
