Atlanta Police said a 29-year-old man has died after being stabbed on the Atlanta Beltline on Sunday afternoon.

According to APD Chief Darin Schierbaum, the incident took place at 725 Ponce de Leon Avenue, which is the address for the Beltline Kroger supermarket.

Schierbaum said Zone 6 officers and the APD Path Force responded to the scene at 4:01 p.m. and located the victim. He was rushed to Grady Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, the chief said.

The suspect detained by officers has been identified as Jonathan Hamby, a 54-year-old white male. The knife used in the attack was also recovered by officers, Scheirbaum said.

The chief said the incident appears to have stemmed from an argument beteween the suspect and victim.

“We encourage everyone to continue using the Beltline and to report any suspicious activity,” Schierbaum said.

WSB-TV reports that the suspect has 30 previous arrests and was on probation from a past felony conviction.

Mayor Andre Dickens said in a statement released on Monday morning that he asked public safety and BeltLine teams to conduct a review of the safety protocols surrounding this incident, including patrols, camera coverage and emergency response.

“APD continues to work to determine exactly what led to this attack,” Dickens said. “We now know the individual arrested in connection with this attack is a convicted felon with 30 prior arrest cycles and a history of mental illness, raising serious questions about how someone with that record was once again in a position to endanger the public.”

Dickens said city would “examine the systems surrounding behavioral health, repeat offenders and public safety, and address any failures plainly with the partners responsible for those systems. Atlanta will continue doing everything within our power to keep people safe, but we cannot solve these challenges alone.”
