The Sandy Springs Garden Club and the Spalding Garden Club seek sponsors for a mile-long planting of daffodils along Johnson Ferry Road.
The flowers will be planted in the middle of what will become the Abernathy Greenway Linear Park.
Proceeds from the Daffodil Mile will be distributed to assist cancer patients and their families through local nonprofits serving St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Northside Hospital and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, according to the group’s literature. According to the project literature, two-thirds of the donations will go toward purchasing, planting and maintaining the bulbs and one-third to the hospitals’ foundations.
“This special garden will be a beautiful landmark for our city and a source of civic pride,” publicity chairwoman Kathy Shapiro wrote in a letter to local media outlets. “But Daffodil Mile will be a living legacy too, because many of its golden flowers will have been planted to honor those who have fought, or are fighting, cancer.”
