For his Boy Scout Eagle project, David Wasserman of Sandy Springs organized the construction of a memorial garden at The Galloway School to remember fellow Galloway student and scout Ben Chanin, who died in 2010.

“It’s not only for Ben. It’s for people to remember the people who have passed from the Galloway community,” said David, a member of Troop 467 at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church.

David, who’s 18 and a rising senior at Galloway, helped design and led installation of the garden in the courtyard of The Galloway School. He raised $20,000 for the project. Excess funds are being donated to the Benjamin J. Chanin Scholarship Fund at The Galloway School, David’s father said.

At Marist School, junior William Mavity combined a love of movies with community service to come up with his Eagle project.

William, a member of Troop 370 at St. James United Methodist Church, made a documentary about the first year of T.J.’s Friends, a fund-raising group of the T.J. Martell Foundation. The teen group was organized to raise fund for leukemia, cancer and AIDS research.
