To the editor:
Linley Jones, Greg Jones, Margie, and I were having dinner together last night at Pub 71, located in then unincorporated DeKalb County.
Greg quoted someone else giving a reason to move from county to city government: “Do it for your children.” ”
Do it for your children”–how much campaign rhetoric was summed up in that one statement.
Fight a good, fair fight to assure that we and our descendants will have a chance to have a final say-so on our fortunes, our futures, and our leadership. Work towards reconciliation for both sides, separating the deed from the doer as needed. Acknowledge whatever DeKalb County has done right in the past, and acknowledge what we can do for ourselves as we move into the future.
Got up this morning, did the household chores, then went outside on my way to breakfast. The minute I took my first real breath of the day, the full realization of what had taken place yesterday, July 31, 2012, hit me.
I wasn’t breathing DeKalb County, but Brookhaven city, air for the first time!!
Everything smelled purer, fresher, full of promise. Gotta go smoke my customary victory cigar. “Happy Birthday, Brookhaven!!” See you soon.
