State Rep. Tom Taylor has introduced a house resolution that, if approved, would allow new cities to form their own school systems.
Taylor introduced the legislation on Feb. 25. The resolution would require voters statewide to approve a constitutional amendment. In December, Taylor told a group of Dunwoody officials that the idea was a long-shot, at best.
At the time he was talking about an amendment that would apply to cities generally, not one that would narrow its focus to cities formed after Jan. 1 2005, the year Sandy Springs incorporated.
Taylor’s bill is in response to the ongoing controversy surrounding DeKalb Public Schools, which includes schools in Dunwoody. The school system’s accreditation is in jeopardy and Gov. Nathan Deal on Feb. 25 announced he would take the recommendation of the state Board of Education to suspend six of the nine DeKalb County Board of Education members.
That decision will have to wait until a federal court rules on the matter. A federal judge issued an injunction over the weekend to stop the removals until a hearing is held, ajc.com reported. That hearing is scheduled for Friday.
