The Cyclorama at Grant Park will offer a day-long event called Understanding the Civil War: An Interactive Family Program on July 20 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be storytellers, singers, re-enactors, dancers, games and more.

That same day, there will be a presentation and reception for author Jessica B. Harris from her book High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America. The event begins at 5:30 p.m.  High on the Hog traces the history of soul food from its roots in traditional West African foodways, and the swill fed to enslaved Africans during The Middle Passage, to plantation kitchens and haute cuisine restaurants in New York and New Orleans.

Each event is free with paid admission to the Cyclorama. Admission cost is $10 for Adults, $8 for Seniors, and $8 for Children (4-12 years old).

“We have planned an entertaining day of family-friendly activities and culinary adventures at the Cyclorama,” says Camille Russell Love, Director of the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs. “During the day we’ll promote family fun and education with some amazing Civil War re-enactors in period costumes, storytelling and demonstrations, and interactive games. In the evening our special guest will be one of the foremost authorities on soul food, Jessica Harris, who will explain why African-influenced cuisine should be on every foodie’s short list.”

The Atlanta Cyclorama & Civil War Museum is at 800 Cherokee Avenue SE, Atlanta, GA 30315. For more information visit atlantacyclorama.org.
