Thousands gathered on the steps of the Russell Federal Building in Downtown on Saturday for a “Justice for Trayvon” vigil – one of hundreds held across the country in protest of the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial. Neighborhood watch volunteer Zimmerman was acquitted a week ago in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in south Florida. Despite a rainstorm, speakers and performers, including Martin Luther King III, spoke to the assembled crowd and called for a reassessment of the so-called “stand your ground” law and to urge a federal civil rights investigation.
