Parishioners of Ebenezer Baptist Church boarded buses Friday morning, Aug. 23, to head to the nation’s capital to commemorate 50 years since their pastor led the famous March on Washington during the Civil Rights Movement.
Gail Brown Hollin remembers that speech well. She was ten years old when she attended the march 50 years ago.
“We had to dress up,” she said. “Mama dressed us up in dresses. It was just awesome standing there watching him speak. He was so energized, so spirit-filled. And the wave of energy that went through the crowd was just enormous. You had black and white people who didn’t know each other hugging and holding hands and clapping and saying ‘Amen’ to everything he said. It was just amazing.”
Hollin and her family would later join Ebenezer Baptist Church and got to know King and his family well. She’s among the group headed to Washington D.C. for the 50th anniversary events.
