The Savannah College of Art and Design is back with SCAD AnimationFest Sept. 23-25
The festival will celebrate the art of animation and will be held at SCADshow theater. Passes are on sale now, and individual tickets go on sale on Sept. 18, according to a press release.
This year’s festival will honor Bruce W. Smith and Ralph Farquhar, the executive producers of the animated comedy series “The Proud Family,” with the Animation Trailblazer Award. Joel Crawford, director and writer of the upcoming film “Forgotten Island,” will receive the Variety Impact in Animation Award.
The festival, which is celebrating its 10th year, will feature sessions with top executives and creatives from companies like Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, Disney Television Animation, DreamWorks Animation, Walt Disney Imagineering, Sony PIctures Television, and more. The festival will also showcase the work of SCAD students and alumni.
“Animation continues to be one of SCAD’s most popular degree programs and this incredible signature event provides students unique access to the creatives leading in the industry,” said Jud Estes, associate dean of the SCAD School of Animation and Motion, in the release.. “We have alumni from our school of animation and motion working and innovating around the globe, and we are thrilled to welcome many of them back to SCAD for this year’s event to share their experiences with the next generation of SCAD graduates.”
The festival will feature events like the Animated Shorts Competition, which was added this year. SCAD and Variety are also partnering to present the latest edition of the “10 Animators to Watch” list, highlighting a group of artists and storytellers who are shaping the future of animation. Variety Chief Awards Editor Clayton Davis will host a conversation with this year’s honorees.
Screenings to look out for include a sneak peek at the new film version of “The Cat in the Hat,” which comes out later this year, and LAIKA’s new stop motion film “Wildwood;” recently released films like “Toy Story 5” and “Avatar Aang: Last Airbender;” and new series like “GET JIRO” and “Helluva Boss.” The full schedule of screenings and panels can be found on SCAD’s website.
