Atlanta Police Chief George Turner announced this morning that the milestone of having 2,000 sworn officers has been met. “We’ve been decades trying to get to 2,000 officers and today we are there,” Turner said during a press conference. “The work is not done, as we are still looking for the best and brightest officers we can find.”
Mayor Kasim Reed also made remarks at the event, noting that many said the APD would never be able to afford 2,000 officers. “They said I was crazy, it couldn’t be done, the city council wouldn’t support it,” Reed said, “I’m proud to stand here today and say we did it.”
Getting the APD ranks to 2,000 officers has been a goal since the 1990s, Reed said.
The 2,000th hire, Wesley Floyd, 23, was also introduced during the event. The Henry County native is currently in training.
