The Atlanta City Council approved a resolution at yesterday’s meeting calling for up $200 million to be spent on upgrades to Turner Field in an effort to keep the Braves from moving to a new stadium in Cobb County. The Cobb County Commission is expected to vote on the $672 million stadium at its Nov. 26 meeting, but it’s still uncertain whether all of the commissioners are onboard. The Tea Party and other angry residents are already rallying to derail Cobb’s plan.
Where Atlanta will come up with the $200 million is uncertain and was not outlined in yesterday’s vote by the council. Councilmember Michael Julian Bond, who introduced the resolution, said last week that he wouldn’t give up on keeping the Braves in Downtown and that a plan needed to be in place in case the Cobb deal fell through.
Mayor Kasim Reed said in a press conference last week that he would not “meddle” in the negotiations between Cobb and the Braves.
