The city of Brookhaven will celebrate its one-year anniversary with two events in December.

From 1-6 p.m. Dec. 14, there will be a celebration at Blackburn Park, 3493 Ashford Dunwoody Road. The event includes Brookhaven’s Birthday Fun Run, a 3-kilometer run. Participants are encouraged to wear birthday-themed accessories, like party hats, boas and tiaras. There also will be a 1 kilometer run in the park, as well as a 50-yard dash for children. There will also be live music, food trucks children’s entertainment and a visit from Santa Clause.

At dusk, Brookhaven’s mayor and City Council will light what they are describing as a birthday tree, a 12-foot evergreen will be planted in Blackburn Park.  To mark the anniversary, the city officials will also bury a time capsule which is to be sealed for 25 years. On Dec. 17, the city’s official incorporation date, the mayor and council will host a commemoration ceremony at Town Brookhaven to honor those that have helped to build the city. The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to both celebrations. The food will be donated to a local food pantry.
