More than 900 students from Dunwoody Elementary School are evacuating to Dunwoody High School after the elementary school lost its running water due to an overnight water main break.
According to the DeKalb County School District, the students have been fed breakfast and will return to the elementary school in time for the normal afternoon dismissal schedule.
A water pipe broke around 2 a.m. on Tilly Mill Road near the intersection of Womack Road, according to Reporter Newspapers’ new partner CBS Atlanta. For several hours, water was shooting into the air and then freezing on utility lines due to the extremely cold temperatures. Workers were having trouble finding the shut-off valve and drove a bulldozer over the broken main to block the water from shooting upward, CBS reported.
Tilly Mill Road is closed between Womack Road and Tillingham Court. The pipe broke near the entrance of the Georgia Perimeter College Dunwoody campus.
