Decatur Police are investigating an attempted burglary and a burglary possibly committed by a group of men who have been targeting neighborhoods over the last few weeks. On Feb. 18 around 7 p.m., officers responded to an attempted burglary in the 400 block of 3rd Avenue. A neighbor reported seeing a white Chevrolet Tahoe pull up the driveway and turn around behind their neighbor’s house. The neighbor further reported witnessing a black male wearing a ski mask and gray hoodie exit the front passenger door of the Tahoe, enter the rear porch and attempt to gain entry to the rear door with some type of blade in his hand. The suspect noticed the neighbor watching and ran back and entered the passenger side of the Tahoe and fled south on 3rd Avenue. No items were taken. At approximately 8:30 p.m, officers responded to a burglary in the 800 block of 3rd Avenue which occurred between 5:45 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The suspects forced a gate and then a rear door and took items from the house.
Decatur Police have captured two juveniles in a carjacking that occurred this morning, Feb. 19, around 1:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Sycamore Street. The two victims were sitting in a parked vehicle when approached by four black males, two of which were holding handguns. One suspect placed a handgun to the temple of the driver and demanded money and the vehicle. The driver complied. A second suspect, described as approximately 5’6 – 5’8 and wearing a red or orange cap, tan “Carhartt” style jacket and dark pants, demanded the passenger’s phone and struck her in the face with his fist. The four suspects entered the vehicle and fled south on Church Street. Neither victim was injured. Officers then responded to a vehicle accident in the yard of a house in the 900 block of South Candler Street and located the victim’s vehicle. One witness reported seeing two black males run from the vehicle onto Driftwood Terrace and a second witness reported seeing two black males run from the vehicle south on South Candler Street. With the assistance of a DeKalb PD K9 unit, Decatur officers located two of the suspects, one in the woods on Driftwood Terrace and one behind a home in the 200 block of Brower Street, and took them into custody. Both suspects are juveniles.
A man attempting to cross the Downtown Connector at Williams Street last night, Feb. 18, was struck by multiple vehicles around 10 p.m. Officers responded to the scene in the southbound lane of I-75/85 and found the man deceased. Two vehicles stopped and remained on scene. At this time the investigation continues and charges are possible.
