The Atlanta Police Department has closed Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard from Pryor Street to Pulliam Street after a historic building near Turned Field has become unstable after a fatal vehicle accident. The APD is encouraging motorists and pedestrians to find an alternate route until further notice.
The crash occurred last November when a Gwinnett transit bus collided with a FedEx truck and both careened into the corner of the former St. Stephen’s Missionary Baptist Church. The building, constructed in the 1890s, had been renovated and tuned into the popular Museum Bar. Initial reports were that the building was so damaged in the crash that it would be razed by the city, but an update in Creative Loafing now suggests that the damaged bell tower will be rebuilt and Museum Bar will reopen.
Officials are concerned that parts of the tower structure may fall into the road, prompting the closure of Ralph David Abernathy. Message boards at key locations and APD officers will be on hand to help direct traffic during rush hour.
