Dunwoody Police Chief Billy Grogan will serve as acting city manager while the city searches for a new city manager.
Dunwoody City Council on April 1 unanimously approved Grogan for the job, which Mayor Mike Davis said would pay $160,000 a year. Warren Hutmacher, the city’s first and, so far, only city manager, resigned last month to take the job of city manager for Johns Creek, starting April 28.
“It’s a great honor the council would ask me to serve in that position,” Grogan said after the vote, which came, coincidentally on the fifth anniversary of the founding of Dunwoody’s police department. “I’ll do anything I can to help.”
Grogan said he’d never held a city manager’s post before, but Davis said Grogan was the logical choice for the job because city surveys show his department is one of the most popular with residents.
“The police department is the most respected organization in our city government, and, being head of it, he is largely responsible,” Davis said. “He worked with Warren [before] and he knows better than anyone Warren’s thoughts. He was the right guy.”
Grogan said he will not be a candidate for the full-time city manager’s job. He said he intends to return to being police chief when a new manager is hired.
Davis said the city will hired a search firm to help winnow candidates for the city manager’s post. He said the city published a request for proposals March 31 and is awaiting answers from firms interested in the job.
Davis said he hoped to have a new city manager hired within 90 to 120 days.
