Joseph Alan Lewis, 19, was arrested this morning in the Morningside hit-and-run incident that seriously injured Greg Germani, creator of the popular Atlanta Time Machine website.
“I can confirm that Joseph Lewis has been arrested. He was arrested over night at approximately 1:30 a.m. at the Zone 2 Precinct,” Officer Kim Jones said in a statement emailed to the media.
Lewis, who turned himself in to police, has been charged with Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder, Aggravated Assault, First Degree Criminal Damage to Property, Aggressive Driving, Serious Injury by Vehicle and Reckless Driving. He has been transported to the Fulton County Jail.
The Atlanta Police Department issued a warrant just last night for Lewis’ arrest. Lewis’ girlfriend, Shanelle Woodard, 22, was arrested July 16 and charged with felony tampering with evidence in the case.
According to the police report, witnesses said Germani was riding his bike on Montgomery Ferry Road and was almost hit by a red Dodge Nitro turning at Flagler Avenue. Germani argued with the driver, who then chased Germani down Flagler Avenue. No one saw the SUV hit Germani, but he was found moments later under a car parked on the curb with the Nitro speeding away from the scene. Surveillance video from a home on Flagler Avenue showed the Nitro pursuing Germani.
On June 23, police found the Nitro in the Gables Midtown apartments parking deck. APD said the Nitro registered to Lewis and was the one that struck Germani, who is still recovering from traumatic brain injury.
