Troubles continue for The Hub, an extended-stay hotel used as student housing by the Art Institute of Atlanta.
Following a fatal shooting on July 24 at the Barfield Road property, the city has issued multiple code violations to the complex. On May 9, Sandy Springs Fire Rescue and Code Enforcement conducted an initial investigation, giving property management until July 25 to make required corrections.
The scheduled follow-up was delayed due to the shooting death of Takeenen Williams allegedly by Art Institute student Patricko Mondrez Davis.
The follow-up inspection was held on July 30, and numerous violations were found throughout the complex.
According to a press release from the city, The Hub was issued citations for the following fire code violations:
- Smoke detectors not working or missing
- Singular portable fire extinguisher out of date
- Fireplaces within the units not sealed
- No paperwork to indicate a fire hydrant inspection
- Locked dead bolted exit door for egress to exterior from lobby area
In addition, Code Enforcement cited The Hub for the following violations:
- Accumulated trash
- Three inoperable vehicles with expired tags on site
- Illicit discharge of paint into the storm drain, and a lack of maintenance on the storm drains, with trash and stagnant water present
- Loose handrails
- Unauthorized dilapidated fence
An Aug. 15 court date has been set in Sandy Springs Municipal Court to address the charges. Fire Rescue was scheduled to reinspect the facility on July 31 to determine if corrections have been made to ensure smoke detectors are present and in working order.
