Local charity Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless plans to deliver a truckload of water this morning to the Peachtree-Pine homeless shelter, which may have its water service terminated at any time. According to our media affiliate CBS46, the shelter hasn’t paid its water bill since 2010. It owes $600,000 in back water bills and legal fees.
Its director Anita Beaty told CBS46 News that the issue is political. She said the shelter is tight on money because the city has refused to sign off on federal, state, county and local funding that would otherwise go to the shelter.
Beaty said she recently offered to pay $100,000, but the city refused the offer and demanded the full amount.
As we reported earlier this week, the city said it will ask the United Way of Greater Atlanta, the Regional Commission on the Homelessness, and other organizations to guarantee a safe facility for the homeless if the Peachtree-Pine shelter is closed.
